Part One: Initial Consultation
Gregg and Val had just moved to the DFW area for work and were still settling in when they reached out to us. They had a backyard they wanted to love, but they couldn’t use it as it was.
The space centered on an open-roof cedar pergola that looked fine but did almost nothing to block the Texas sun. The outdoor area was practically unusable through the hottest months of the year.
Their existing outdoor kitchen was also an issue. It was built around propane because there was no natural gas line nearby, and the layout couldn’t fit the high-end integrated appliances they’d always wanted.
After the initial consultation, the priority was clear: open up the space and build something they’d actually want to spend time in.
What we found during the initial site review...

No real shade
The open-roof cedar pergola provided almost zero protection from the Texas summer heat.

Unfinished kitchen
The existing outdoor kitchen ran on propane, and the layout couldn’t accommodate modern, built-in appliances.

Obstructive center post
The pergola had a post positioned right in the middle, making the whole space feel cramped and awkward.

Unsightly gap
Red lava rocks sat between the pergola and the house, collecting debris and making the space feel incomplete.
Part Two: The Design, Planning, Permitting
We don’t start building until every detail is locked in. Gregg and Val knew exactly what they were getting, down to the countertop edge profile, before a single tool hit the ground.
Covered Patio Plan
We designed a 280 sq. ft. detached gabled covered patio to fully replace the old pergola, topped with a dark walnut-stained cedar frame, a warm, clear-stained pine tongue-and-groove ceiling. It was also redesigned to eliminate the center post, opening up the full footprint of the space.
Outdoor Kitchen Plan
We designed a brand-new 23-linear-foot L-shaped outdoor kitchen built on a reinforced concrete footer, faced in Austin Nicotine chopped stone, and finished with custom Buff Lueders Limestone countertops. We also engineered the entire kitchen layout to run efficiently on liquid propane.
Electrical Plan
The full electrical package included a ceiling fan, two recessed LED can lights, three conveniently placed outlets, and two independent wall switches. All of them run through painted EMT conduit that blends seamlessly into the structure.
Part Three: The Complete Timeline
This custom outdoor living space, from demolition day to final sign-off, was completed in 6 weeks of active construction. Here’s the full timeline from contract signing to final walkthrough:
Oct 16
The contract is signed, and the project was officially underway.
Oct 17–Nov 25
Our designer delivered the first 3D renders by October 22nd. A virtual design call with Gregg on October 30th locked in the layout and appliance specifications. On November 25th, Gregg and Val came to our office to finalize every material selection.
Dec 1–10
Both the HOA application and the city building permit application were submitted on December 2nd. HOA approval came through on December 8th, and the City of Trophy Club issued the building permit on December 10th.
Dec 11–Jan 19
The first draw was invoiced, and field schedules were prepared. In January, the team coordinated 811 utility line checks to clear the site for safe excavation and construction.
Jan 20–Mar 5
Materials and equipment arrived on-site on January 20th, and demolition of the old pergola and kitchen began the day after. The next eight weeks were active construction, from framing the gable roof to the final electrical trim-out. The last city building inspection was called on March 5th and passed.
Mar 6–13
Final punch list items were addressed: oversized post base wraps were installed, and all raw cuts were stained to match. We had the final walkthrough with Gregg and Val on March 13th.
During the final review, we found that the fixed shade wall hadn’t been dropped far enough to provide adequate sun coverage. We corrected it before the final sign-off at no extra cost.

23-Linear-Foot Masonry L-Shape Kitchen
This outdoor kitchen was custom-built from the ground up. Our masonry experts constructed the full L-shaped base in locally-sourced Austin Nicotine chopped stone, then finished it with custom-fabricated Buff Lueders Limestone countertops. There’s generous counter space, built-in storage, and enough room to cook and entertain at the same time.

Showroom Appliance & Cabinetry Package
A $5,000 appliance and cabinetry selection allowance gave Gregg and Val the freedom to handpick everything that goes into this kitchen. The stars of the show: a new X-Large Big Green Egg smoker and a full suite of premium Blaze Outdoor Living stainless steel storage. For the flat-top station, Gregg and Val chose to supply their own Blackstone griddle, which we mounted flush with the countertop.
