Building your own inground pool is technically possible. People do it. The honest answer is that the cost of doing it right yourself is closer to a professional install than most homeowners realize, the risk of getting it wrong is enormous, and the time commitment runs into hundreds of hours over several months.

If you’re still set on attempting it, here’s what the project actually involves end to end, and where it most often goes sideways.

The Permit and Code Side Nobody Talks About

Every inground pool in the United States requires permits, inspections, and code compliance. The specific requirements vary by jurisdiction, but they typically include:

  • Building permit for the pool structure
  • Electrical permit for lighting and equipment
  • Plumbing permit for the water supply and drainage
  • Fence and barrier compliance per local code
  • Final inspections at multiple project stages

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission publishes the federal pool safety standards that govern barriers, drain covers, and access controls. Local codes layer additional requirements on top.

Skipping permits is the fastest way to create a problem that costs more to fix than the original project. Unpermitted pools cause issues at resale, may not be insurable, and can trigger fines if discovered during property tax assessment or other inspections.

The Five Biggest DIY Pool Mistakes
